Broken Ribs

No not mine but my Jarrah Planked Marko Sambrailo hull has several forward ribs that have cracked. I am not sure why as they look very good otherwise and they appear bone dry. Could they have cracked from being too dry?

Of course my question is what to do to repair them? Do I have to replace the whole rib or can I repair across the crack? Do they need to be pulled together to keep tension on the hull planks? That is do I need to close the gap before re fixing? Could I for example secure 'U' channel steel around the rib and secure it in place?

All suggestions and advice gratefully accepted.

Cheers,

Martin

The normal method is to "sister" the frame, ie install another frame in place right next to the broken one. This is a very common repair. Often you can laminate a frame in place and then fasten it in the normal manner. It's actually very easy in most cases...

Ditto! Did a couple on an old sports fisher I had once. Sometimes they get broken by taking a hit, or they just get old. But sister across 4 planks if you can. You can laminate/epoxy in 4-6 1/4" strips to get the right radius. Mine were white oak.
