Bristol Channel Cutter Wheel Steering Instead of Tiller

Hello,
I am thinking to switch from tiller to Edson pedestal and wheel on my Bristol Channel Cutter. Is there anyone to give me advice or opinion?

tiller steering is so simple and bulletproof especially with attaching wheel steering installation to an outboard rudder. I would think twice about that. Autopilots are cheap for a tiller too and not for a wheel. More weight, cockpit clutter to work around etc. :>)

Yuk! Seems all wrong. The entire boat is setup around that tiller. It could be done, but the wheel will need to be small to fit in the cockpit, and it would still block movement through the cockpit. You also need to figure a way to attach some sort of quadrant to the transom hung rudder. It's all going to make a real mess of a great boat. You did ask for opinion's!

Fit a windvane instead, and let it do the steering for you. A wheel is unneeded on any boat under 35 foot, and stupid on any boat under 30 foot. I am sure it woukd reduce the resale value by at least the cost to remove the abomination from the cockpit.

Is this guy a troll????? Why would anyone give up the simplicity and reliability of a tiller for a wheel??? Especially on a boat with an outboard rudder that throws a lot of complications into the mix.

What lubber would do a thing like that? First the cockpit is tiny so a stand up will not work. Install a reverse wheel at the transom; which will be simpler to install and is a worm gear set up. If you like standing, install handholds on the boom gallow.
Plus the boat will look real stupid with pedestal steering.

Please don't even consider this. Tillers are way better and far simpler than wheels.
























Please reconsider this. Tillers are so much better than wheels on most boats. I've bought boats with wheels and done the opposite, always a big improvement as far as I'm concerned. Less to go wrong, less weight, more room and you can get under a dodger going to weather ( if you have one )

My mantra: Never buy a boat unless it has a tiller and an outboard. Less to go wrong. Easy to fix.

don't do it. tiller is better for a lot of reasons.

Completely agree, putting a wheel on a BCC would be a huge mistake. Check out my video here on a BCC done right:

I watched the video & you have done really beautiful work. The boat is spectacular & I doubt there is a finer example anywhere. One thing I noticed about the tiller is how removing it really opens up the small cockpit. Obviously something you could not accomplish with wheel steering.
