Bowsprit replacement Downeaster 45

Turns out the rot at the back of the bowsprit is much further along than I had originally anticipated.

We were originally thinking of doing an epoxy soak to bring back the structural integrity, but now it looks like the rot is so bad that the cleat (that was poorly installed) was able to be pulled off with little effort.

Does anyone know of any folks in Southern California that are able to do a full replacement of a bowsprit this large?

Boat is in Wilmington, CA.

Bowsprit is approx 9 feet long and 8"×8" on the aft end tapering to 5.5"×5.5" at the forward end.Click image for larger version

Re: Bowsprit replacement Downeaster 45

Can’t help with your specific question. I do have a steel boat that I replaced the sprit. The origional sprit was 4x4 box section, 8’ long. I replaced that with a Ss 316 box section 4”x4” and 8’ long. I took that “opportunity” to add some whiskers and move the bow rollers forward and out so that I could accept new generation roll bar anchors; they fit on the roller and don’t foul the bob stay.

Good luck.

Check this video out. They did a bow sprit replacement on a Downeaster 38. I have communicated with them a couple of times. Really nice people. You may want to contact them for technical advice or to pick their brains. Good luck with the project!

FYI... We used to keep our girl at Cabrillo Marina.

Cheers! SV Sailfish
