Bottom Paint Questions
I found out that my sailboat had some Naval Industrial Bottom Paint applied. Commercial and what not. How long does this last estimated little to no use just sitting. I am taking it out of water on Thanks Giving and re-applying the paint regardless.
Next Question: A paint that will last a year or two and prices any thoughts on what to go with? Trying to avoid 300$plus per gallon . Thanks.

Re: Bottom Paint Questions
If the boat just sits there most of the time I'd use a hard paint. An ablative will not work as well. Look for high copper content. A hard paint will work better as, no matter what you use, if the boat sits a lot you'll need a diver every few months.

Re: Bottom Paint Questions
Micron extra would suffice? 39% content. I own a 28ft do you suppose it would be three gallon job? I've never applied this type of paint before. Thanks for the information Vasco.

Re: Bottom Paint Questions
macncheese...1 gallon will probably be good for you. i have a 41ft with full deep keel, and mine takes 4 gallons. that is for 2 coats and 3-4 on leading edges and waterline.

Re: Bottom Paint Questions
Really that was it? I'll have to look in to quantities more so. I was just about to purchase that amount to make sure I did it right.
I found this so far Calculator

i would think with 2 us gallons you should get 3 coats,i would also reccomend buying a liter of xyleen thinners for clean up,and thinning if it is hot,and getting the last of the paint out the tin so no wastage.
also using the blue or green masking tape will save hassel of normal masking tape not coming off properly.
using a broom handle to extend the roller handel will save your back from a lot of bending over!

Re: Bottom Paint Questions
using cheap paint is only for boats in snow country where they haul out every year. paint only needs to last a few months.
for florida boats i highly recommend pettit trinidad. it comes in many flavors but you want the one with the highest copper content - i use the 'professional' version which has maybe 75% copper. check the cans because some colors - like red - have a higher copper content than the exact same paint in another color. at least two coats, and use any left over for the high wear areas such as leading edges.
two gallons would be more than enough for your boat, imho. buying cheap paint may save you money now but you will have to haul out more often and that can pretty quickly negate any savings on the paint.

Trinidad is the best anti fouling paint available, IMHO. However Pettit has reduced the copper content in both the Trinidad SR and Trinidad Pro (identical products, BTW) to 60%. They now process the copper differently than in the past, making less copper work more effectively.

Buy 2 gallons, probably doesn't cost much more than 1 gal and 2 quarts. The paint lasts forever so save what you don't use for next time or touching up.

Re: Bottom Paint Questions
Having been using Micron Extra for many years. Get up to 3 years between haulouts. Do have to hit it with a soft brush occasionally but that's a minor problem.

Re: Bottom Paint Questions
I have good luck with Micron Extra, also. If you don't know the manufacturer of the existing bottom paint, You might want to buy a quart of what you propose to use and do a test spot to see if the paints are compatible. You could also call the manufacturer of the paint you would like to use and ask them if there are any compatibility problems, or any tips on what to use. In the past, I have found that a quality supplier wants you to be happy so you buy more paint and will steer you away from a certain product if they suspect a problem.

Re: Bottom Paint Questions
This time last year the PBS Store had the best price for Trinidad Pro. Shipping was very reasonable and speedy.
