Boating Competition

i'm in a boat building competition, and the engine can only burn 2 gallons of fuel per hour...does anyone have any suggestions as to what type or brand of engine i should be using?

two gallons an hour is a lot of fuel.. what size of boat are you building and what is the motor going to do as are you looking for speed, pulling power, and can you use an outboard or inboard..

In what sort of hull? As the primary motive force? What speed do you need to achieve?

well, as far as the design we have going, it's just a simple boat, with sleeping space for 2 adults and 2 children, along with a head and a galley, so if that gives you an idea. the competition rule is, the boat can only burn 2 gallons of fuel or less. we're looking at possibly a hybrid engine, so i thought i would ask anyone on here if they had any suggestions. i'm new to this, so you'll have to forgive me

we're looking at an inboard, as from the research i've done online, it says that an outboard is a 2-stroke, and inboard is a 4-stroke. all we know is, the vessel we want to build, for the competition, it can only burn 2 gallons an hour, or less. i'm new to all this, so you'll have to forgive my lack of knowledge. i thought i would ask anyone on here, and see what they'd say

that's a lot of fuel. look at the burn rates for yanmar or westerbeke, kubota, etc......you can move a relativly large boat at a reasonable clip on less than 1/2 a gallon an hour.

outboards are also 4-stroke.

And some inboard diesels are two stroke.

Given your inexperience with boat building I would suggest a kit. Something like this could be layed out to sleep 4, have a galley and a head and powered by a small diesel.

With a 15-20 HP diesel it'd sip fuel and two gallons would probably last you half a day of cruising.

i would wager a guess that this is about the wooden boat design contest, which i believe must be able to make 10kts + or so with the conservative fuel figure let me see if i can find a link to the challange
