Block plane

I want to add a block plane to my tools for paring teak plugs, trimming wood and general shaping. Can anyone recommend a good buy? I can only budget about $100.

The good old Stanley low angle 12-960 plane that I bought 45 years to start building our Westsail kit has been my go to plane ever since. The low angle will cut cross grain on lumber, planes the cross grain panels of plywood with ease, knocks the edge off boards and is made for one handed planing. Don't think I paid a lot less for mine in the previous millenium.

Bought the Lie-Nielsen brass block plane thinking it would survive better on the boat. Like the Stanley plane better for its larger size.

I too am a woodworker. Love my LN plane as well. Have a stanley which is my loaner both work equally well it is all about keeping the blade sharp.

You don't use a block plane for trimming plugs; use a chisel.

For planing I recommend getting a low-angle block plane with an adjustable mouth, similar to the one in the lower left of the photo of my principal kit.

A good old Stanley is my go to. You're probably looking for a #4.

I typically just look at garage sales/craigslist and just refurb them myself.

I have two, an old cast steel base Stanley I carry on the boat and one of the more modern pressed steel units. The old Stanley is easier to use as it has a bit of "heft".
