block maintenance

Do I need to lube my blocks? If so is it bad to get lube on the sheeves?

I've never had to lube a block, just wash in warm soapy
fresh-water, once in a while.
To tell the truth, I've never noticed any improvement in
operation (rolling resistance), after washing - not even on
a ratchet-block (though I may have missed it).
I wouldn't think that you'd want to get any lube on the
sheeves or cheeks, where it could foul a line.
