Blister pics for Minaret
Boy are we lucky to have him around...
Oh joy of joys... stripping the bottom for paint I discovered the old gelcoat blister blues... More of a pox really... 1/16"-1/8" dia... patches total maybe 30% of the hull... 6" to 3' diameter patches...
No laminate intrusion or damage, looks like it's all in the gelcoat... I assume the hull is dry, as it hasn't been in the water for 3+ years... Will try and take moisture readings, wish I would have done it yesterday before the rain deluge today...
I know the gel has to come off for a proper repair, but pressed for time and $$, so no repair this haul... But assume if readings are low, a barrier would prevent any possible laminate intrusion in the meantime???

Aren't we all pressed for time and $?
Looks like very minor gelcoat blistering and no problem with the layup.

Classic pox. You got it right, if meter readings are low, coat it. Unfortunately, I think you will find it reads neither low nor high, but somewhere in between. That is, between 15 and 20 on the GRP-33. If you are definitely only leaving it for one year, I would not coat it if it reads over 17-18 for any substantial portion of the bottom. Just take it down to gel and slap some paint on it, or even just sand it for tooth and slap some paint on it till then. Even if readings are low, I'd hesitate to spend the time and money doing it right, only to peel it off next year. Price it out, do some research, and decide for certain what the future holds. If that's a full bottom job in one year, then cut your losses for now. If it doesn't absolutely for certain include that, coat it as long as it's under 18 for most of the boat.

Re: Blister pics for Minaret
if readings aren't too high , sand paint off, coat it with epoxy resin and go.

I guess I was trying to say that taking a stopgap path is an unusual route for me... I'm a do it right, do it once kinda guy... So I usually find the time and money when I need to...
I am however... flush with good looks, intelligence, and plenty of tail... But I suppose that should be posted in a new thread, as to not detract from the subject here...

Exactly what I was looking for... numbers an engineer can understand!
Feeling is that there are plenty of things that are a higher priority, and keeping it on the hard is unavailable here... I was going to simply sand for tooth, but had a lot of areas that flaked right off when attempted...
If my readings are low, I'll slap the 2000 I already bought on... Only difference is the extra rolling and few bucks... Also heard 2000 has a short shelf life? Strange, as epoxy generally has a long one???
Anyway... This was the info I was looking for!!! THANKS A TON MIN!

Cheech... This was the first plan, as I have plenty of resin and barrier with resin skilz... Went 2000 cause I have plenty of money... I converted all my cash to Rupees... and just don't have the room to store it all...

Oh...
And a word of advice... While no guarantee... Your help is only as good as the relative cost...
This is what I found when taking a break from my nearly stripped other side of the boat...

Oh, and Happy? More respirators, please. A girl with a bottom paint moustache is less than ideal. I know you said you're swimming in tail, but they are not disposable...

Not to mention the copper oxide in the lungs.

Is that a closed up thru hull with no exterior glass, right about Kansas?

Re: Blister pics for Minaret
Be interesting to see the readings if the boat has been sat in the sun for 3+ years.
Would a peel now save a shed load of time drying out? or won't it matter?
Just a thought.

I'm curious too!!!!
Off to the boat...
Will give an update tonight!!!
PS Min...
Planning on 2000 Then bottom paint on a big section today...
(moisture readings depending)
Any tips on waiting times between 2000 coats and 2000 to bottom paint?
We're expecting a tad of rain for a few hours tonight 12-3AM... 25%
70f now, 50 tonight... any issues if it's all on and had a few hours to dry??

Re: Blister pics for Minaret
So, what's the moisture reading?
