Billable hours

Hi all,

I've had a lot of work done over the last few months by a Yanmar dealer. While the work has been ok, I've suspected that his hours billed have been, shall we say, generous estimates.

It has now come to a head with the removal, refurbishment & replacement of the fuel injector pump on my Yanmar 4jhe. The charge for the refurb itself seems reasonable, but the hours billed for the removal and refit seem very high (i won't say what the number was, just yet)

Could anyone with some expertise in engine maintenance tell me what a reasonable estimate of the labor hours needed to remove/replace the pump?

Re: Billable hours

Rumour has it that it should take about 2 hours, if you have good access to the pump.

Read near the end of the first post.

Cheers.

Re: Billable hours

It depends on ease of access and travel time. If you think you are being charged excessively, it's reasonable to ask for a breakdown of all charges and an explanation. Any reputable mechanic will provide that information.

Remember, everything seems easy for those who don't (have to) do it.

Re: Billable hours

I would say that if the engine is exposed and clean that pump removal should take 1.5-2.5 hours.

But if the boat is 45 minutes from the mechanics shop, a 15 minute walk from the parking lot and the engine is crammed into a small dark hole with the fuel pump crammed against a bulkhead, then all bets are off.

Re: Billable hours

Thanks to all who have helped so far.

Just for background: Access to the engine is very good (see photo), and the boat is 5 mins from shop, and a short walk from the carpark
