Best Way to Apply Non-skid Grit?

I want to apply some sand grit into Sikkins Cetol gloss coat. What is the best way to apply this evenly?

Re: Best Way to Apply Non-skid Grit?

I like to use a combination of fine and medium grit nonskid. Awl Grip sells them by the can, Inturlux also sells a similar product.
I pour them into my spray gun dry, just the nonskid. Then open the tip just like you would to get more paint, then adjust the fan. Spray them about three feet above your work moving the gun from side to side.
This has given the most even and most professional looking nonskid I have seen.

This is a great technique. Note that it only works in a siphon feed gun and not a pressure pot. I too use only a mix of fine and medium Griptex, it's the best. Especially for a situation like this where you want clear non-skid. It helps when spraying to use a very large gelcoating fluid tip. Occasional backflushing is often required to clear stoppage. When purchasing Griptex also note that the proper nomenclature is Fine, Coarse, Extra Coarse. There is no Medium, though everyone calls it that. It's a mix of Fine and Coarse, don't use Extra Coarse unless you want to bleed a lot.

This is the grit that is to be sprinkled on to the wet gloss coat and allowed to dry. My concern is that whatever I do won't spread it evenly.

Ive always used a Large US Navy pepper shaker! stainless steel with a handle on it ! maybe not as good as a sprayer, but it cost a lot less LOL and if ya are careful, it works well ! just a cheap thought

Re: Best Way to Apply Non-skid Grit?

Usually when doing skid decks with LPU I like an old flour sifter, but when doing clear you generally want a much lighter skid pattern so the sifter is too much. If you must use a shaker instead of spray, most anything like Bob's shaker will work well with practice. I find that getting an even pattern is easiest when done indoors or in no wind, sprinkling from a height of 4'-5'. Depends on what you are using though.
