Best Paint for Gold Cove Stripe
Hello, getting ready for flag blue Awlgrip and trying to figure out the best option for the gold cove stripe. Any thoughts? I have heard the Sheffield gold enamel works well. What do the pros use??? Should I spray Awlgrip? It is a molded stripe.

Re: Best paint for gold cove stripe
I just got done with this color scheme last year. I went to an automotive paint store and looked through the paint books at different golds and chose one. In hindsight I should've waited for the shipping and ordered the shefields as the auto paint just doesn't have that gold color I wanted. It does hold up well though.

Re: Best paint for gold cove stripe
After painting Bluestocking's cove and scroll for many years, I now just let my vinyl guy lay in 5/8" gold tape. Present tape into 5th summer, still looks good. Its on Imron.

Re: Best paint for gold cove stripe
I used the 1Shot paint with a brush in the past and was very satisfied. One coat will do it, is long lasting and UV does not harm it. Its a great product, albeit a bit pricey.

Check their colour chart on-line. I could only find it in art supply stores.

After a guy used a chemical stripper on my brightwork and damaged the gold leaf on my molded stripe, I chose the gold awlgrip. It was expensive to mask and paint. I hated it. I now have the gold leaf that is often used for boat names. I also have flag blue awlcraft paint on my Little Harbor. I also clearcoated the boat including the tape after painting the boat. Looks great.

Re: Best paint for gold cove stripe
How is gold leaf done? Without masking? All done by hand and eye?
I like the idea of a painted cove stripe, but it always seemed to be such a hassle, and I am such a perfectionist, I have rarely been satisfied, just annoyed by the imperfections. The best I ever got was hand done by a sign painter, all 72 feet of it!

Re: Best paint for gold cove stripe
On my last boat I routed a cove stripe into the planking and sprayed it with gold LP. Looked great. But gold leaf looks better.

Re: Best paint for gold cove stripe
My brother is a professional painter and without a doubt gold leaf looks the best but is expensive. It is an art and applied by hand. He has done it on numerous boats but if you want it to last it needs to be clear coated with Awlgrip.
However, I masked and painted my Seawind's shear strip with gold Awlgrip and after 16 years was still in perfect shape when I sold her.

Re: Best paint for gold cove stripe
Just did my boat with Awlgrip, aqua mist for the hull and for the cove line I used Awlgrip Pale Gold.

It's not possible to judge the quality of the stripe from that photo. Or from most any of these, actually.

What are you looking for exactly? I may be able to get another picture for you.. Are you wanting a really up close picture or the stripe to see the metallic flake in it or luster? Those were just what I had on my phone at the moment.

Re: Best Paint for Gold Cove Stripe
not sure if you made a decision...
i just shot the hull with awlgrip flag blue and the cove with awlgrip cordovan gold.
the pics i have at the moment do not do it justice so i'll upload a few in a day or 2.
idk about other paints, but i needed 3 and opted for 4 coats of the gold.

Re: Best Paint for Gold Cove Stripe
I took some old gold Spanish coins we found on windward beaches of Martinique, filed them down and mixed the gold dust into plain epoxy. At first the line came a shade too light but we all know epoxy tends to darken over time.
