Re: Best color/colour Antifouling?

I think pink is new pink.

It sure keep all homofobic critters well away.

I have seen pink a-f on local fishing boats and I sure liked this shade.

Another great use of pink a-f is you get a fella sailor drunk then slap his bottom pink overnight. He wakes up to many poorly concealed laughs from the rest of the anchorage, as well as to a couple of winks!!!

;-)

Yes, I was greedy! ..... 'trying to poke my way in among those already occupying the best space and expecting the wind to stay the same. It was all gentle and I came off clean and sound. It wasn't pretty or well presented, but my bottom paint looked good!

Whatever color you decide Mark, I'd do it about a day before you plan to leave the stinky lagoon. Amazing how fast it fouls in there!

The navy dose it and they never get sunk by whale. Just a thought.

Re: Best color/colour Antifouling?

First coat of antifoul in red, then 2 coats of black. Only re-apply when you start to see the red showing through the black...

Not entirely true. My office mate served on the Galviston. They hit a whale & cracked their rudder post & a prop shaft. Deemed un-repairable, the boat was eventually scrapped.

Re: Best color/colour Antifouling?

I noticed I get less algae on the areas in the shadows, such as the bottom where it is the widest, between the keel and the propeller.

For this reason, I select dark colours: blue, grey or black (no whales in my area).

The reason you get less growth in these areas is because there is less sunlight reaching them. The color of anti fouling paint you use is not going to affect this variable.

Re: Best color/colour Antifouling?

With red or blue paint, I can see the rudder from the dock and can tell how much growth is on the bottom. With black or green, I can't.

Best color/colour Antifouling?

I think Black makes the bottom invisible to ocean critters😉
I any case use a contrasting "tail coat" so you can see when your ablative paint is due for a recoat.

Nice idea; however, the ocean critters that adhere to boat bottoms don't have eyes or a means to propel themselves toward or away from a boat bottom.

Clearly you've never cleaned a boat bottom.

Yep! Don't miss those critters.

I'm sure you have post this answer before, but what would you use to clean a new bottom? New... as in one month old, ablative (Super Shipbottom), just inshore of the Gulf Of Mexico in Texas. No barnacles, but maybe just a bit of slime. A piece of carpet, soft brush, or....????

Carpet or a white Doodlebug pad.
