Awlgrip's Awlwash?

Awlgrip's literature says to only use their Awlwash product to clean and then use Awlcare to shine it up. "They" say their labs have tested other methods and these products are the best. They're pretty pricey so any feedback from the masses?

Will awlwash get rid of the tannin moustache?

There’s probably cheaper products that will clean and shine as well, but I haven’t found them. I use both products and they work well. I especially like the awlwash, and it’s concentrated so one bottle lasts a couple of years.

Alison, AwlWash will not remove tannin stains and your awlgrip should not stain. If it is staining than the protective coating on the surface of the paint has failed. About the only thing that will remove it and not further degrade the paint is lemon juice. Wipe it on, let it sit for about 12 hours and the stain is gone. Oxalic acid will also remove it but will also hurt the paint. The protective coating on Awlgrip is a very thin surface layer and once that is worn down, the only cure is repaint. Many soaps, especially dish soap, will quickly wear off that protective layer. Some carwash soaps that are safe for all painted surfaces are just as good as Awlwash and a lot less expensive. Awlwash does not put a shine on the paint. It needs to be sealed with Awlcare. Chuck

Once a year I wash with diluted dish detergent (one big squirt in 1-2 gallons of water), and then use Awlcare. After 5 years the hull looks brand-new, and I never pick up a mustache.

That's pretty amazing. we have been living aboard for 20+ years and I can't imagine what our boat would look like if we only washed it once a year. Even when living in the Florida Keys where there is very little pollution in the air. The best we have been able to do is once a month. Chuck

Chuck, Sorry to mislead you, I was referring to the hull only. The deck is washed much more often.

BTW, an Awlgrip rep told me not to use Awlcare on non-skid surfaces, as it can make them slippery. Maybe partly why the decks need more frequent washing.
