Awlgrip ? How Can I Tell ?

When I launched last season, I removed the pin stripe because it was completely shot. However, it showed me the true color of what I should expect and well - it appears that will require more than a little sanding to get past the 30 years of haze.

This year as I was putting the cover on her, I remember when it was shrink wrapped (last winter), the installer mentioned it was Awlgrip on the boat.

It does not appear someone painted to the pinstriped so am I looking at the original paint and 600+ is the place to start, or is it Awlgrip, and I need to choose a different means of getting the coat back - like replacing the pinstripe...

Thoughts on how to tell?

Re: Awlgrip ? How Can I Tell ?

If it is a 2 part paint, you probably won't have much luck bringing the gloss back, other than mild compounding (to remove contaminants) and waxing. To tell if you have a 2 part paint, find an inconspicuous (sp) place, and put a solvent dampened cloth (like Interlux 2316 - you can probably find someone who has some 2-part solvent around you can borrow) over the paint, and cover with plastic for a few hours. If the paint lifts, it's probably not 2 part. If it looks good, it's probably 2 part.
