Avg Bottom Job Price

I know it depends, just looking for a ballpark estimate to get an idea if I'm being overcharged or not.
38' boat, 33' waterline, full keel. Last bottom job hull was stripped to gelcoat so boat has few layers to deal with. Brand / type of paint I'm going to leave up to them. I've seen a couple of their bottom jobs and several months later the bottoms were clean, so whatever it is they use, seems to work.

I would think you would need 3 gallons of paint max, some rollers, brushes, etc. If the bottom is in good shape, it only needs a power wash and a light sanding (I use 80grit drywall screens on a drywall doodle stick - nice and fast and I don't have to bend down or get under the hull).

So materials will be <$1,000 (and that is assuming high prices).

Anything above that is labor and haulout.

We are about to do bottom job ourself. Prices we got average @ $30 per foot. We can let you know for sure in the next week or 2 bringing the boat in today and will have confirmed price later today or tomorrow thanks

In Florida you would pay about $2,500 for 2 coats, everything included.
$2k for one coat.
Trinidad paint.

Our first boat we paid to have the bottom done. Forget how much but it was over $700 for a 27ft boat.

Our current boat we cleaned and painted ourselves, cost was paint and ppe. Cleaned up the hull using a stiff rotary brush in our drill. I was surprised how well it cleaned the crud off the hull.

I thought I was the only person to do that. People at the club looked at me like I was mad when I pulled out the faithful porter cable drywall sander and hooked it up to the shop vac. But it worked a treat.

That would be even better. I was using a doodle pad on a stick, not a powered one. Maybe doodle pad isn't the right word for it, but it is a pad that holds drywall sanding screen that has a wrist joint on it connected to a stick so that the pad stays normal to any surface it is on.

I did our rec room in our old house with a PC electric drywall sander and that was sweet!

If I understood correctly I was quoted $47 a ft. now if that's a waterline ft then 33 x 47 = $1551.
But I bet by the time it's all said and done, it'll be the $2,500 like CSY man said.

Haul, pressure washing, blocking, re-launch etc. is in that price?

How much do you think to buff and wax the boat?
A maintenance coat of varnish?

$2500 is about what they charge at St. Augustine Marine Center for a boat like ours.

BTW - we used hydrocoat SR on top of our old Trinidad SR this go around... I'll be interested in seeing how it does. This was recommended by Pettit. They said to only apply hard anti-fouling once and then subsequent painting should be ablative.

Buff and wax - also about 2K but did it ourselves. We bought the makita and once we got a hang of it, it went fast. My arms and back were not in good shape though. We needed at least 2 each of the right type of pad for our 38 foot boat... the sponge pads are nice because they rinse out, so we would do that often.

I've got a Makita, used to do our 23' CC and that was all I wanted. For 2K I think I might have to take it a little at a time as it only last a year, if your lucky.

I intend to do all of this once I retire, just until I do time is limited and I'm doing 99% of the mechanical / electrical work getting her ready

more like $600 unless the gelcoat is badly oxidized.
(talking about the topsides only now, as it is normally done when hauled out. Deck, cabin top etc can be done anytime while
in the water)
As for varnish, normally not a yard fucntion, too dusty anyway.
I pay a guy $20 per hour for varnish work, but prefer to agree on the price for the job beforehand, then he can take all the time in the world. I usually paid $1,000 per year for all external teak on the CSY 33. That includes sanding, taping and 5 coats and could easily take 2 weeks.

Once you retire you might not want to ever strip the bottom. It's a horrible job to do yourself. Now's the time.
