Are Toaster Ovens too hot?

I wanted to know if anyone has a built in toaster oven on board in lieu of a microwave? I find that we always use our toaster oven at home and would much rather have one on board instead of a microwave, but I have yet to come across a toaster oven that does not get very hot on the outside. My major concern is if one were installed on board where microwaves normally go would this be a fire hazard or is there such a thing as a toaster oven that does not get excessively hot on the outside?

Just leave appropriate clearance.

I have a toaster oven with fiberglass nearby. Allow ventilation and clearance. The radiating heat isn't all that bad. Certainly won't come close to melting/starting fires.

Oh good. I've never actually seen one on a boat but then again there are lots of things in life I've never seen. Thanks

I should probably follow my post up with: Experiment.

Put one on, turn it on highest for a while and feel the surrounding panels for heat.

As a reference point, I have 3" clear on the sides and 9" clear on top. That's working with the setup I have.

Ymmv

And I love mine!

Can cook 2 pizzas simultaneously, a small turkey, etc. Due to catamaran galley down layouts, I went with a cook top and separate wall oven. Bought a full size home, propane wall oven, but it needed additional clearance that wasn't specified. Until it was delivered to me. Wouldn't fit with clearance needed.

So... i just went over to a huge, huge toaster oven. Thing is amazing.

Trying to sell the $600 wall oven, but I left it in north FL. So that's not going so well. ha ha

There are Zero Clearance Toaster Ovens.
Check the specifications/mounting instructions for your specific candidate model(s).

Re: Are Toaster Ovens too hot?

I would worry more about how many amps it draws. Usually with microwaves it's only on for a few minutes. Toaster ovens will take a lot more power. About 100 amps or more @12v for how long?

Re: Are Toaster Ovens too hot?

whatta yous a cop?

I mean what's pot?

I mean what can you tell me about growing and processing a certain green plant on board? Oh new thread idea. Should that go under provisioning or life aboard?

This is going to get fun, or is it mello? It's been a long time, I can't remember.

Only thought about using it with a generator or while plugged in, not worried about using it off the batteries. Good point to consider though.

I think it interesting though that with all the jokes that could be made about a toaster oven, you went straight to that

Re: Are Toaster Ovens too hot?

I would look at one of the newer infrared ovens. Based on the endless TY ads they use less power, work faster and do more things. But that's theoretical and I'm still muddling through with my old microwave.

Try this easy test: Fill the toaster oven with old anchor chain, 2' should suffice, then chuck it overboard. If it floats back up to the top, go ahead and use it...safe.

Not only should you lose the toaster over, but lose the microwave, coffee grinder, coffee maker, espresso maker, stern rail bbq, juicer, food processor, the propane stove (with oven), and propane tanks as well. Thats hundreds of pounds of junk cluttering up your otherwise lovely boat.

Sailing is about roughing it, inconvenience, and roughing it some more. Only single burner, pressurized alcohol stoves are allowed...keep pumping that stove! Only one burner required. You can have a second burner if you are fabulously wealthy and want to flaunt it, but never ever use it...its a backup.

And you will only need one large pot. All meals must be prepared in the one large pot. You must eat the entire meal before you wash out the pot to boil some water for coffee. Of course coffee is always served black, and should be thick enough to support the spoon in a stiff breeze. It must be a large pot. In most countries, it's a serious crime to have a little pot aboard.

If you really don't like pressure alcohol stoves, you can always go "old school": mount a tomato juice can in the galley, and use a few sticks and leaves from shore to make a small but hot fire to cook your one pot meal. If you burn yourself on the hot can, get some dirt from your first aid kit and rub liberally on the burn. This also works for cuts, bruises, and pink eye. It doesn't have to be expensive "marine dirt", any old dirt will do, although 316 dirt is best.

If your boat is over 35', you can have a second large pot. This way you can have coffee with your breakfast, instead of before/after. If you get a flare-up, heat a little extra water for shaving and washing, since you must remove your hot water tank to make space for storing more sticks+leaves for the stove.

In conclusion, toaster ovens belong on shore with the unicorns and rainbows. A real sailor does not want pizza bagels. Just splash some rum on my cornflakes and I'm good to go.

While I share your sentiment I have to assume one of 2 things, either

A: You do not have a spouse and/or children.

or

B: You do have a spouse and she is way more "rustic" then mine is.

I fortunately for me have both, but unfortunately for sailing have both.

If I want to keep my wife and children on a boat I am going to have to princess up a bit and get the amenities

What do you mean all the jokes? Have I been missing out on toaster jokes my whole life? Isn't that the 1 conceivable joke to make about a toaster oven?
