i.e. compression post. Think it's a good fit? I only ask because I have access to drop pieces I can use.

I don't know that wood but I would think most any wood should work fine in compression. Is it water resistant?

Pretty much. Very dense. Used on heavy haul trailer floor boards. Very impact resistant. Can't say it never rots but Highly doubt it would in this situation.

A friend of mine with a wood sloop built a new rudder out of Apetong because it was extremely dense and oily, so much so that teredo were unable to penetrate. It was extremely heavy. I've made hammer and chisel handles out of it and it lasts for years. I think it would be fine to use, certainly strong enough.

Are there drawbacks to the wood? It wounds as if it could be very useful around boats and for boats in general.

How big is your boat? That sounds like a big, heavy column.

I am replacing a floor in Skylark, a Pearson 36. The previous repair attempt was make with 3/4" plywood and the limber holes were not sealed rendering the wood into a sponge...

I made a 2" thick "T" of black locust, a wood that has been used for fence posts for centuries.

It is very dense, water resistant and not oily. ...and not too expensive.

The only drawback to apitong is that it is extremely hard to glue due to its oil, much more so than teak oil. It also tends to check aggressively when in large timbers. Other than that it doesn't get much better. With that said apitong is worth a fortune to hard wood stores ...

Its going in a Lancer 45 motor sailor. It had a 4x10(3-1/2x 9-1/2) pine timber in there. I still can't understand why anyone would used pine. I was going to screw and glue it with 5200. I'll plan to use more screws then I'll need, since finding out their hard to glue.

I just finished using Apitong for new Floors in a 37 Ft. Sail boat, will be there when were all dead,hand tools don't work on this timber, only power tool's, 5200 will work fine. Been doing this kind of work for over 25 year's.
