To the OP -- you may not want to get hull insurance, but you should at least get liability insurance. Many places you'll want to go (most boatyards, for example) require that you carry minimum liability insurance. Not to mention that you might be okay working on your own boat, but if you damage someone else's, they may require your cash, not your labor, to fix it.

You may be very handy, and have skilled labor at your disposal, but I'd wager that this project, if you undertake it, will be much larger and much more expensive than you're thinking. If you're sold on live-aboard, and sailing doesn't matter to you, you can find a run-down fiberglass powerboat in the 50foot range for dirt. At least it'll float.

To avb3, like the others, I would strongly advise against this project -- but draft wouldn't be one of the reasons. Many areas are out-of-bounds to boats with draft like that (11'6), but if I read correctly he plans to keep it in New England. While not every harbor/channel provides 11'6 at low tide, there are oodles of places to go/stay in New England with a draft like that.

Considering the shape the boat is in I would add that this would be 6 years pretty much full time. If only doing boat stuff after work and weekends it would be double or triple that or could be a lifetime job.

I said it could not be done. In this realm, my "great victories" are legion. Take it from me, multiply your refit budget by 10, and it might get you started. You do realize you'd have to ask your father and brothers to work for you full time for free for several years, right? That's the scope of the work involved, minimum. Weekends are not going to cut it.

I'm all for cheap and sweat equity, but one doesn't go to the moon on the first rocket built. Get a small boat, restore it, live in it, then when done sell it and get a bigger one.

Wasn't this the boat that a Britt (IIRC) and his Phillipino wife that ended up in Canada and made himself unwelcome. No job, junk boat, no money, they wouldn't let him stay at dock, etc. I think they sent the wife back to her home country.

I'm pretty sure there was a thread on here about it.

That thing need a crew of people working for a year to get it seaworthy. If you could keep it on the hard for free, maybe you could tent it, live in it, but I'd bet that it would never go back in the water.
