Any experience with Sikkens gloss cetol?

We are finishing the last coats of cetol on our cap rail and are about to apply Sikkens gloss as our final coat.
Has anyone had this product on their boat and how did it hold up?
I have read that the gloss peels after a year or so in the sun. Anyone had that experience?

Funny.... I was just looking at my toe rail today; been 28 months since it was last done. I think I might look again in six more months. Still glossy in tropical sun!

Used to use 2 coats Cetol light and 3 coats clear on the caprails of my IP. Looked quite good and SOOOooo much easier to touch up than varnish. Wasn't quite as smooth or clear as varnish though, but I think the best compromise out there.

Been using Cetol for years on our boats, which have lots of teak. We travel in south Florida and the Bahamas and it has held up better than anything else we have ever used, and we have used them all. Chuck

I am applying Cetol Natural Teak to all of my exterior teak. I was planning on using the gloss to over-coat, but I decided not to as it is slippery when wet. Just the Natural Teak for me, looks beautiful

I can tell you from years of experience with Cetol that the base coat will not last very long without the gloss. So you'll have to do it more often. We don't find the gloss to be any more slippery but then we don't use it on our decks. Chuck

you can lay on the gloss a little thicker than you would with varnish. you can also do a light sanding with 300 grit between coats and get a smoother finish. my gloss never peeled off after a year or more.

Has anybody seen this product in the US? Directly translated it means hard-wood-oil-varnish but I have no clue how they would market it in English:


I heard others say it works very good but never hear it mentioned here... I have no outside varnish so no experience.

I have used Sikkens. I think it belongs to the upper shelf along with Epifanes. Good stuff.

I've been applying Cetol products for 15 years on lots of teak on my boat.

My findings. Cetol gloss must be applied over a base coat. Used by itself it will peel as it doesn't stick well to bare wood. A maintenance coat of Gloss will keep it looking like new while not obscuring the grain. Recoating with just base coats (Cetol Marine, Light, or Teak) will hide the grain and give it the Orangey look that is objectionable. Though not recommended on the can, I thin with Penetrol to give a smooth ridge-free coating. In the Chesapeake that one coat of Gloss applied annually is enough to rival varnish (well, almost - but with less work).
