Re: And So it Begins . . . Knottybuoyz' New Project

Over here we had our first frost two nights ago. The tomatoes are done for now.

I pulled the epoxy out of my vehicle and put it inside the boat, so no more epoxy exterior work until April. PS- I always keep the inside of the boat above 40º F.

Now you can get to that Honey Do list that Lori's been building all summer.

Re: And So it Begins . . . Knottybuoyz' New Project

I couldn't let any more of this fine fall weather slip by without doing anything on the boat so I decided today was the day to muster some courage and install the thruster tube.

First task was marking a straight line along the tube. A quick Google search turned up this trick. Using a piece of angle makes it easy.

I then went inside the boat and using the specs from the mfgr for the thruster located the ideal spot for the tube. It has to be a minimum of 4" below the water line and 4' above the bottom of the hull. This presented a bit of a challenge but using my laser level I was able to locate the water line inside and then parallel lines for the distances required. This put my aligning holes 13" behind Frame A (my baseline for all the measurements for the tube install). Using the directions in the mfgr specs I made up a hole drawing thingy from 3/16" mild steel rod.

Worked perfect.

A quick run around the holes with the jig saw and they were ready for the first test fit.

Slid right in with a lil' trimming. I marked up the tube where it'll need to be trimmed off. This seemed easier to do on the work bench so I pulled it and using the templates from the instructions cut the holes for the thruster and trimmed the ends.

If the weather cooperates I might glue it in place tomorrow.

Nice job.

It hit -21c here last night so you better hurry. We usually warm it up a bit for you and then send it east. Should be there in a day or two...

Maybe I'll quit moaning about the bit of snow and cold we've got .... nah, snow in November on Gabriola! I hate it.

Re: And So it Begins . . . Knottybuoyz' New Project

Got a letter today, after 31 yrs in the Coast Guard my position has been elimated. Looks like a forced early retirement for me. Upside is I'll have more time for boat building!

Not sure yet James. All the cards aren't on the table yet. Will keep you all posted.

The first thing is to get out of debt. Pay off everything. Things will become so low stress that working on the boat will be hobby.

I cashed out one of my retirement funds and paid off the house and saved $8K in interest. The only debts now are utilities, taxes, insurance, food and fuel. The other retirements are handling that with half to spare.

It's a freedom you will not regret and the boat can be done in leisure time rather then duress.

Re: And So it Begins . . . Knottybuoyz' New Project

I only know him by "Fabio" on the Bateau.com web site. For the better part of this last year he's been building his own TW28. From the looks of it they launched it last night.

I enhanced his photo as best I could and hopefully we'll have some better pics sometime today.

Well done Fabio!
