It might be longer than the one in the picture. Its yours if you want it, my current project is a sailboat, can't use it. Shipping will be problematic, but its located in Highlands, NJ 07732, near NYC. If you're in the area anytime I can run it over to you.

Hi Chris
I guess you'd call it a mast. Even though it's on a powerboat. I'd certainly like to have yours as an addition to my project but as you said shipping would be an issue. There's always a chance I'll make it down that way, we were there year before last. If it's not a problem to keep it there for awhile I might be able to talk the Admiral into another road trip.
Thanks much.

Re: And So it Begins . . . Knottybuoyz' New Project
Glad you'd be able to use it. It's not going anywhere. If anyone friends or family going your way uses the NJTpke, I'm 15 min from exit 11. I'll bring the mast and meet them at that rest stop.
Lucky you're working "indoors". This spring whether really sucks down here. The wind is constant, off the water and makes it really uncomfortable to work on the important stuff, like the boat.

The weather hasn't been all that great around here either. I guess global warming is shifting weather patterns all over the place. We had a pretty good blow last night, probably 50+ MPH winds. Kept me up all night with visions of a big blue shed heading off into the stratosphere!
Can you send me a pic?
I might have to make a solitary road trip to NJ!

Re: And So it Begins . . . Knottybuoyz' New Project
Update: Got another layer of glass on the keel yesterday. Had a kid from next door helping. He jumped right in! It was over 80 degs in the shed so we had to work quickly. I can see how a third set of hands would have been a great help. Two rolling and one mixing.
Will be prepping the bottom for glass this week so more sanding ahead. Small steps but hopefully they're in the right direction.

Re: And So it Begins . . . Knottybuoyz' New Project
2 hrs sanding with the 6" pneumatic RO vs 6 hrs with the 5" electric RO. Hmmmm? Used up about the same number of discs.
The operation was a success but the patient died!
The larger air compressor and RO sanders were a good investment. I've got a couple hours sanding on the other side then I'll be laying down the glass for the bottom. I'd like to be able to work wet on wet but it's just not possible doing it myself even with a helper. I can live with it.
It's about 80 degs in the shed now. Time for a siesta then back at it.

I never would have guessed that an air sander makes quicker work.

Re: And So it Begins . . . Knottybuoyz' New Project
Some carbon fiber (Saertex) added to the keel and area where the rudder port will be. I had the material and nothing planned for it so I thought these areas could benefit from a little extra reinforcement.

I'd recommend some kevlar on the bottom of the keel though.

It's there Del. I apologize for the crappy cell phone pic.
Almost the entire bow area and stem have a layer of carbon fiber as well.
I wish I had more of the stuff but it's pretty pricey.

In the spirit of CF I will say that anyone who cannot see kevlar doesn't belong out there, no matter what kind of anchor.

Fiberglass! As far as the eye can see!
33 OZ Quadaxial. Approx. 10 yds. Should suck up about 3 gal of epoxy.

Re: And So it Begins . . . Knottybuoyz' New Project
I probably shouldn't have attempted to do this by myself but I did.
11 yds of 33 oz fabric is a bugger to wet out. It took almost 11 hours, 4 1/2 gallons of epoxy, 12 pairs of latex gloves, 2 roller sleeves plus the other expendables. I apologize for the crappy cell phone pic.
I know I was going to have a problem with bridging with this heavy material so I faired out some of obvious spots. Missed a few so I'll have a few voids to deal with. I'll have some prep work to do on the other side before I start that. Mostly runs and some epoxy spills. Not looking forward to it but there's more room to work on that side of the boat so it should be easier.

Re: And So it Begins . . . Knottybuoyz' New Project
Here's a pic of today's efforts. Doesn't look like much but there was a good 4 hrs of sanding and wiping to prep the surface for the fiberglass. It'll likely take me another 11 hrs to do this side. Thursday or Friday I'll get to that.

Are you buying epoxy in the drum?
