Advice needed on FOAM cushions and V berth mattress!

I have a brewer 12.8 recently acquired. The aft stateroom has a recent thick (not heavy ---custom mattress.) No problem there. However the salon has the original cushions Huge 6inch+ thick -very heavy and lumpy-pull out berths each side. Also ugly Kitschy material of anchors and windjammers uhg! The V-berth is similar . SO heres my question: I want to change these to a comfy 4 inch thick (actually V-berth could use 3 inch as no one ever sleeps there. This would make boat roomier and help make the salon berths into seaberths... ADVICE PLEASE)))) thanks

I have ordered from here before, and been very happy with the service, price, and quality:

Re: Advice needed on FOAM cushions and V berth mattress!

It depends on how much of a project you're up for. It is all simple work, and straightforward, if you choose to DIY.

We usually go to a foam shop, with the dimensions and have them cut the foam for us. You can use any fabric you want to cover them. We use a 1/4" piece of closed cell foam that we bond with contact cement to the bottom of the 4" firm foam, this eliminates mildew on the bottom.

When I cover the cushions, I first pre-shrink the fabric by washing and drying it. Then I iron it, cut out the top and bottom, then make the strip for around the sides. I prefer to have the zips go from half way up the sides all across the wider part, and half way down the other side, because it is then so very much easier to re-insert the cushion after washing the fabric.

PM me if you want more information.

Ann

Two sites I recommend are sailrite.com for online videos on making boat cushions and thefoamfactory.com for reasonably priced foam.

Thumbs up Re: Advice needed on FOAM cushions and V berth mattress!

The foam factory web address foambymail.com Apiece of foam 82x76x4 in their lux high quality foam is only 167.99 shipped. I am going to give it a try to see how it is to sit on and sleep on.

Re: Advice needed on FOAM cushions and V berth mattress!

We bought our open cell "rain through" foam here 4 inch thick. Very light weight and made with anti-fungal in the foam. They also sell glue for making any shape from the rectangle you buy or your scraps. We used this to make the odd shapes for the V-berth.

We bought cloth here Geometric, Crypton Upholstery Fabric items in ADF Upholstery Fabric Outlet store on eBay! We hired the sewing done by someone with greater skill & a proper machine. Photos below.

This is another source I found but did not use.
Foam Mattress, Foam Cushions, Foam Rubber, Sofa Cushions, Replacement Cushions
