Adding Halyard Organizer Plate -- Shrouds Too Short

Hello,

I have recently moved a little bit away from dreaming with my purchase of a South Coast 23. She seems to be a rather unknown design and I have not been able to find any active owners associations.

I currently have a hinged mast step (which I really like) that was installed by the previous owner. I would like to add a halyard organizer plate under this hinged step, but with the organizer, the bottom of the hinge and the top of the hinge, I will only have about one thread holding my turnbuckles to the shrouds!

https://www.dwyermast.com/items.asp?...ganizer+Plates

Does anyone have a suggestion for the 'right way' to resolve this without replacing the running rigging with all new wires?

I have considered grinding down the area under the mast step or adding something to the turnbuckles. I am not sure what option will provide the strongest rig.

Thank you in advance for any advice!

Scott.

Why not just bolt a couple of pad eyes through the deck. Cant be that much to organize on a 23 foot boat. Keep it simple and sail

Re: Adding Halyard Organizer Plate -- Shrouds Too Short

If adding an organizer plate under the mast step reduces the turnbuckle engagement to that little, it is likely that is it still too little engagement without the plate. The simplest way to lengthen short shrouds is to add a toggle at the chainplate. You will want the shortest ones that fit & are strong enough enough or you may end up with the opposite problem.

+1 on the toggle, that's what they're made for. It will cost a little, but far less than replacing the rigging, and shouldn't be too bad on a 23-footer.

Thank you for the responses!

As tenchiki suggested I am not too comfortable with the little engagement there is right now. I will plan to add toggles regardless of what I do with the halyards.

Is it reassuring to know that this is the correct use for a toggle.

Thank you!

Scott.
