Re: Adding copper dust to bottom paint

I appreciate that the effectiveness of the copper coat may be different between warm and cold waters but do not think that cold water fouling is less, indeed it is vigorous and tough to deal with rougher, colder waters.

Also the latest formulation of Coppercoat does not need abrading.

Ran across a very successful homemade formula up in Alaska. Used copper powder mixed with Teflon powder. Plus epoxy

Re: Adding copper dust to bottom paint

At the risk of sounding like a Boy Scout, and sixty years ago I was one, let's not forget that the bottom paint regulations established around the world are there to protect the environment, and that following the most stringent of them is the responsible thing to do. We, our children and grandchildren have only one planet to live on, and this is it. Let's each of us do what we can to protect our beautiful Earth.

All the best

I am interested! MY requirement for an antifoul is that it doesn't require a scaper just a sponge off say, 4 times per year.
Funnily enough I have the PTFE powder here and was going to give it a try on my rudder in the Cu/epoxy.
Do you know what type epoxy was used? Ratios of copper/PTFE/epoxy?
Mesh size of PTFE.?
Thanks in advance!

Although, I don't think Cu or Cu oxides/salts coatings are in the future for more efficient FR's.

Please try mixiing copper oxide or copper sulfate into your drinking water and let us know how you get on. The vast majority of bottom paints are not based on elemental copper, but on its toxic salts.

That was my point.

Re: Adding copper dust to bottom paint

I have used Copercoat brand bottom paint, have had the same paint on for 8 years, with minor touch ups. It is epoxy with copper powder mixed in. Once a year it needs a burnishing out of the water, and monthly cleaning like anything. This was a 47 foot trawler in Florida/Bahamas. Like it so much I am putting it on my new 52 foot trawler.

Trawler: There you go, not the sailboat market at all. Powerboats tend to cruise at higher speeds, for a start. Same way that the bottom paint under the QE2 would be a poor performer on a sailboat.

I guess my Cu+ west would have worked if I had done that. Dive it 12x /yr.
I applaud your effort. Mine worked well for a year. no clean....oops.
I don't have the budget to hire help, so require an AF that is more efficient.
M66 until they perfect the slipperies for a quarterly clean sched.

"Technically you can add copper powder to any paint to give it biocidal and antifouling properties."

Right. This explains the widespread success of homemade anti fouling paints. Bwahahaha!

Re: Adding copper dust to bottom paint

I have mixed hot chili pepper powder into ablative bottom paint. Enough to turn blue paint purple. It works great!

Today liquid capsicum is available. Also ghost pepper powder. Those would work even better.

Re: Adding copper dust to bottom paint

It must be nice to either know everything... or know nothing. When you ,know everything then of course you can learn nothing, when you know nothing - you can learn everything.. So the commercial bottom paints that have copper powder as active ingredient MAGICALLY were conjured, no one ever made a batch and refined it and tested it and proved that it works and because it is MAGIC - of course it can not be duplicated or reverse engineered.. It must be wonderful to go through life KNOWING everything?

If it works so great, how come there isn't (and never has been) a single commercial version on the market?
