Acrylic dodger glazing?

I'm looking at glazing my dodger with 6mm acrylic sheets. Maximum size is about 600mmx700mm, and there are 5 of them.
I'm wondering:-
1) Is acrylic the best material for this? What else?
2) Assuming yes, what is the best thickness (I'm guessing 6mm, but does anyone have better suggestions?).
3) What would be the best mastic to hold them in place?

Most installations drill oversize holes, but I think it would be easier to make a frame to hold them and then to screw the frame into place.
