ABC Bottom paint

Ok,

So I have 5 gallons of ameron PPG "navy" ABC bottom paint. Says navy on the product code.

Anyway, I believe I can get one coat on my bottom with about 3 quarts. Another forum member suggested he put on 5 coats and it did pretty well for 5 years. My experience with ablative is it's either super soft and comes off even if you put a ton of coats on prior to 5 years or if it's hard but not too hard the cooper seems to leech out after 18 months or so and no longer work.

So, does anyone else have direct experience with the ABC? I may just out on 3 coats and carefully decant the rest for the next haul out. Or in my case likely a paint on the beach at low tide.

The manufacturer's rep can tell you the optimum film thickness for that paint. Then see if he'll let you know where to get a gauge to test the thickness of your paint after you've applied the full 3 qts.

We usually use the left over bit of paint to coat the high wear areas: the waterline, and the leading edges of keel and rudder.

I'm not sure it's correct, but we have been told that it's best to use paint of the same age, like to not mix last years and this years. Of course, I can see how this concept might benefit the sellers, so don't really know if it is true.
