36' Union polaris bowsprit

Hurricane Katrina created a project boat for me. All her issues have been discovered and rebuilding is underway. Slow because life interferes.
I still have to do research on a number of things. For example, her bowsprit was snapped off at the foredeck; the cranse iron is gone but I have the two foot remnant of the sprit. Pictures from a survey hint at a trapezoid shape to the spar, triangular on the underside and flat on top so maybe the taper is to a rectangular end, but looking at other boat pictures I have seen a circular end.
So a 7 foot 8" x 8" timber of Douglas Fir tapering to what? And how heavy for a stainless steel cranse, with, I guess four welded rings?
Thanks for all suggestions.

Something like this?
Lord Nelson 41 and 35.

We had a LN35 and the bowsprit was solid Mahogany about 8 feet long overall.

Re: 36' Union polaris bowsprit

Buy a kranze and tapper the bowsprit to that dimension. There is a great source for kranze in the UK (I'll have to look it up and repost) around $150 for a manganese bronze cast mast band /kranze/cranze. Port Townsend foundry is another source and they have done work for other Union 36 as well as the HC 34 which should be pretty close and if they still have the molds can whip one up for you $$$ but beautiful. Most kranze seem to be around 3.5" inside diameter for the 34-40 ft boat range.

Re: 36' Union polaris bowsprit

Here are pictures of my bowsprit that I am refitting. It is made up by laminating 3/4 thick teak boards then glued and screwed together. lasted 30 years, I am redoing the stainless pulpit and fittings. The end is turned round and the cranes fits against a shoulder.

Re: 36' Union polaris bowsprit

Doug - I decommissioned my 36" ketch and have the bowsprit with all its rigging and hardware, cranes iron, gammon iron and deck mounting bracket. It is 8' redwood tapering from "" square down to about 4" square. All the hardware is stainless, with many attachment points for lines, blocks etc, and the gammon iron accommodates two anchor rollers, which I have as well. This could make your rebuild very easy.

Re: 36' Union polaris bowsprit

Thank you all for replies. I had a good laugh too when I saw what I had written, Terra Nova. Almost in the same sentence!
Good views and beautiful work evident.
This spar/sprit goes through a Samson post and that butt end, I have. It is a beefy 8"x8" end. I would like to keep that.
Thank you Gord May for the welcome and I will contact Mr Perry's office and see what is what.
