Well if your usual motoring pattern draw the batt down in 2-3 hours, that will leave little safety margin for unanticipated situations where you may need full power for maybe a full hour.

Unless the genset is powerful enough to run the propulsion motor at full power when the bank is depleted, that would tgen be OK IMO.

I can motor at full power ~3 hrs at batteries only.
7-8 hrs at batteries only at calm weather, 3-4 knots.

Selected gas gen is not able to provide sufficient power to motor at full power (it can provide sufficient power to motor at half throttle only). Such a decision is dictated by the fact that I do not want to install a heavy generator and do not expect a situation in which it takes a long time to motor at full power.
In case I need long full power motoring, half power provided by gen, rest provided by batteries. In case of full charged batteries it is 7-8 hrs of motoring at full power. After that I have to reduce power by half and use only gen, because batteries discharged to this time.

Is this a good idea - next navigation will tell.

Great my concern was safety, windward side of a hazard, tides shift. . .

Obviously depends where / how far you go.

So when at risk, keep batts topped up to a higher level than you would need to otherwise.

I will make a changes according to experience I get during navigation. I want to make the reliable hybrid drive at the end.

If your custom-built batts will be difficult to reproduce to add more in your voyaging, maybe increase capacity sooner rather than later.

Not a great idea in general to add old to new. Nor to have multiple smaller banks.

But if you think you're OK for 3-5 years, carry on, can just get a bigger replacement bank when the time comes.
