Hi All!

I recently acquired a boat with a Yanmar 3GM30F engine and I'm putting together a tool box for the boat.

Are the engine bolts/nuts metric or standard? (Boats about 800 miles away so I can just check)

Yanmar is Metric

Most of the nuts and bolts are 10,12,13,14,15,19mm. I forget what the head bolts are. You will need deep sockets for some of the head nuts. Crank nut is 36mm. Inside crank nut requires a fabricated extra deep 36mm socket. But that's needed only for a full tear down.

So a set of metric wrenches, a set of sockets, a few deep sockets, ratchets and a breaker bar will pretty much do it for you.

Add a puller for the seawater pump impeller. On my Yanmar I am unable to pry it out using a screwdriver, as I have been able to do on other engines.

Torque wrench and feeler gauges too, if attempting a valve adjustment.

17mm to bleed the injectors on mine.

I have found that fuel line wrenches are much better for use on the injector lines, while replacing them all last year.

FWIW:
The BASIC Yanmar OEM tool kit (704507-92100 now 704800-92100) contains:
10mm/13mm combo wrench, 12mm/14mm combo wrench, 17mm/19mm combo wrench, 22mm/24mm combo wrench and Phil/flat screw driver.

Good lists above! I have found that a socket that fits ALL the screw heads on the hose clamps (might be more than one size) is priceless and will save your knuckles from bleeding all over the place when the flat head screwdrivers slip....

Buy some nut drivers, they are cheap and basically amount to a short socket made onto a screwdriver, so the socket can't fall off.

Pardon the thread hijack, but Gord May got me thinking.

In addition to tons of hand and power tools aboard my boat, readily available at my nav table are:

No. 2 phillips screwdriver
medium flat blade screwdriver
needle nose pliers
small adjustable pliers
retracting metal tape measure (12')
multi-use screwdriver as noted above

This small collection of tools will address a great number of issues, allowing me to avoid getting out the big tool collections. Very handy.

And the Klein tools are top quality.

By the way, US measurements are frequently referred to simply as IP, or inch/pound.

The supplied Yanmar tool kit will get an awful lot done in a pinch... that said there is no substitute for a real tool kit for those who know how to use them

Myself I'd rather not use an open end wrench to remove the water pump">raw water pump, to change the impeller. For the 3gm30F, it's FAR easier just to remove the two 12mm bolts and pull the whole pump out.

A good socket set and a ratchet or two does it proud. Don't forget the extensions and a u-joint for tight spots. Not that a 3gm yanmar has many of those.

I agree on keeping some tools readily accessible for the quick need.

Are you certain it's a Yanmar water pump? I ask because I have a the same engine. The first time the impeller failed, I felt good because I had a Yanmar basic spares kit that came with the boat, including impellers. Pulled one out, took the pump apart only to discover it didn't fit. The pump is not a Yanmar part and after some research I discovered a lot of Yanmar 3gm30's have a non-Yanmar water pump.
