Yanmar starting woes

This is a new one for me.

I have a Yanmar 2ym20. It had been sitting unused for about a month. When I turned the ignition today it did not turnover, but the starter did make the sound of an electrical "spinning" or "whistling" anytime the key was turned.

I tried it about 10 times until finally something caught and the engine turned over and easily started. After that, it was fine.

Admittedly, I am no mechanic but seemed strange to me. Anyone else experienced this who can offer some guidance?

Cheers and thanks.

Re: Yanmar starting woes

I would suspect that the bendix drive on the starter may have jammed. Just remove the starter, inspect the mechanism which engages and disengages the starter and if no parts are broken, just give it a clean and a spray of lubricant and it should be OK.
If it has not been inspeted for a long time and is old, it would probably pay to check the brushes and commutator whilst you are at it.The commutator shoud be bright and smooth, and the brushes should be within the makers length spec.
Regards,
Richard.

I've got a 2qm20 an one silly mistake I made early on is to remember to make sure the compression lever was in the right position. In your case, since it eventually turned over, make sure it's all the way in/out when you're starting. Taking the starter off and checking it isn't a bad idea regardless. Good luck.

Yep, sounds like faulty starter drive (also called "Bendix"). Maybe some WD40 or contact cleaner can free it up, if not replace it.

I don’t believe Yanmar made a 2YM20. They list a 2YM15, and a 3YM20.
