Yanmar Starting System

I like the relay solution--it makes it so easy to add a remote start. It is handy to be able to start/restart both at the helm and in the engine room.

I just purchased a suitable automotive relay from a SuperCheap Auto store (here in Oz). You can get them any where. Cost approx. $15.

This is a well documented problem with the 3GM, but Yanmar still has not acknowledged the issue. I tried installing a relay, new starter button, new key switch and had some success, but the problem always returned. Replaced the starter and it still did not sound right, until I replaced the wiring between the starter button and the solenoid with #10 AWG tinned marine wire. This solved the issue and has not been a problem for over 3 years.

Just tossing this out there. How about a scewdriver be just as good arching the selnoid or even by passing it for a remote start. Thats me just guessing if you can get acess to the starter where it sits.

I see the op is rewiring but as a thought when needed in a bad case scenario of a default selnoid and or worn switch.

That particular 1 appears to have 2 un-plated terminals. I'd search for a bit better quality.

Sorry, I forgot to mention you should not put this relay in a socket or use those push-on connectors. Solder the wires directly to the terminals. Then support the wires and relay such that the solder connection does not flex at all. Slather the whole thing with liquid rubber. This pretty much eliminates the corrosion problem.

Send my a PM with your email address and I will send you an article that I wrote on curing my Yanmar start problem. My problem was traced to the wiring harness connectors between the control panel and the starter solenoid. I disconnected the key switch wires in the harness and replaced them with 10AWG wires--straight run--no splices between the key switch and the starter solenoid. Problem cured, permanently.

Some Yanmar engines have an interposing relay in the wiring harness (used on very long harness extensions.) Most boat owners are unaware of their existence and unfortunately, many mechanics overlook them also. I have sat through some very long and sad tales about this one.
