Yanmar SD60

Need to perform 50 hour maintenance on 3JH5C and SD 60. Manual states that oil in sail drive can be change with boat in water by suck oil out of the tube. Using a West Marine vac pump only about 1/2 qt came out with much noise. Placed the tube in to the oil fill hole and easily brought out 1.5 qts. the capacity is stated as 2.8 liters. I put new 1.5 qt. back in. Can the full change wait until haul out at end of season or need to hang it now?
O'I did a full oil and filter change to the engine now need an official valve check by an authorized tech.

Did you open the filler cap while trying to suck from the tube?

You have to let air in to get oil out.

I have found that if you remove the cap on the oil removal pump, it will draw oil much better. No pressure build up in the waste oil container.

Yes, just as I did for the engine. I used the same tube from the pump kit for the engine and the sail drive. The engine has a bigger diameter upper metal tube so that the suction tube just needs to be pushed down about an inch to make a seal. The sail drive has a rubber tube that is the same diameter about 6 " down to the base plate.
Do you have experience with the sail drive series with this feature?

Sorry, I don't. I do have experience with the WM oil removal pump.

Hi Cap Bill. I have just had the 50 hr service done on our new SD 60's here in Queensland Australia. The Yanma mechanic used the vacum oil pump to remove the gear oil without drama but stated that it is impossible to get all the oil out without hauling the boat. He estimated he gets 90% utilising the new system from the top of the unit.

The first change is best done with the boat out of the water so the SD can be drained and inspected for water and metal contamination. Remember water will settle at the bottom of the gear case with any other debris and this is rarely picked up by a pump suction tube unless it gets right to the bottom of the casing and is difficult to detect.
