Yanmar Really Clunks when Going into Gear

I just installed a brand new YANMAR 4JH4AE 54HP diesel in my boat. The engine is mated to a KANZAKI marine gear. I believe it is a KM35A2 and is a cone clutch setup. I am trying to figure out if the clunk i hear is normal for this engine or do i have a defective transmission? The yanmar mechanic stated that it was normal when he heard it, but i expected it to be a bit more refined considering it is a modern Japanese built motor. It runs great when in gear and goes into reverse quite smoothly. I would love someone to alleviate my fears and tell me this is normal. Can someone with this model or a similar yanmar please weigh in with your experiences before I call the dealer and start ranting like a lunatic.

Thanks

Jarod

I have a 3 blade fixed prop. The pitch is not dead on but engine will come within 100rpm of max rated. I did go with a bit heavier shaft than is suggested for that engine, but i wouldn't think that would make a big difference. I went with a 1.5 inch shaft instead of the standard 1.25 inch shaft. This was necessary due to the wide bearing spacing....i would have suffered shaft whip with the thinner shaft. I called a different Yanmar dealer and he said they get better over time and it is nothing to worry about...which is what the dealer i bought the engine from is telling me. I just really want to hear from someone other than a dealer that they have experienced the same thing and it either got better or was a non-issue.

Thanks

The idle was set at 700 rpm...this is as low as it will go and still run reasonably at idle.

I have a big clunk too but the maxprop is adding to it. It sounds different going to reverse.

I hope it's normal ;-)

cheers,
Nick.

Every boat I've been on with a Yanmar engine and tranny has a noticable KLUNK. I think unless you go to a hydraulic tranny you're kind of stuck with it but they seem quite durable.

New motor mounts too???
I had a 3HM35F on a 1 1/2 year old boat which always had one clunk when the engine was stopped. I thought it was normal. Years later, I checked the motor mounts when doing an engine alignment check. Sure enough, one had a broken stud. The clunk was the engine jumping off the broken stud and landing on it again. That was the only time I heard the clunk.
After replacing the mount, it was gone.

Good to hear it is normal. I replaced the mounts as well so it wouldn't be related to them.

Yes the KANZAKI is cone engagement and the clunk sound when putting in gear is normal for these transmissions. I have been working with KANZAKI's for years and they all do it.

are you sure the forward you are selecting is the forward for the box? Reverse has an idler gear. If you have the wrong handed prop, you could be going forward in rev.

The prop rotates clockwise and the transmission is specified as a right hand drive. I don't think that is the issue. Good thought though i never even considered that as an option.

Inthewind I need your advice. New Yanmar 4Jh4-HTE with Kanzaki gear. Engine dies immediately on putting into fwd or reverse with a lurch/clunk. Prop & shaft straight and clear of lines. It runs fine in neutral. It runs fine when shaft is disconnected. When I hand turn the shaft there is a slight catch. Does it sound like cone gear, or could there be something like a secondary stopping device that stops the engine on putting a load on it? Any help greatly appreciated!
