I have not pulled a transmission on my sailboat either, but you should be able to slide the shaft aft after disconnecting the drive coupling, depending on your boats design, you may can slide it quite far aft, or the prop may hit the rudder
in a few inches, but even that may be enough.
I'd support it, maybe not real important, but I don't see how it would hurt
