Yanmar Fuel Filter

I have a Leopard 48 that is arriving next week. I just learned that instead of Racors as the Fuel Filter system they are using Yanmar system with a yanmar spin on filter and water sensor. I have never used this and I am considering changing to Racors which I have experience with and they are easy to change without causing air in the system and the benefit of the glass bowl at the bottom etc. Sooooo.....Do I spend 2500 replacing them or do I use them and save the money. Keep in mind its a cat so I always have a spare engine running if one goes down. I would especially like to hear from someone who has the "newer" version of this Yanmar with first hand experience.
Thanks
Randy

Re: Yanmar Fuel Filter

Randy. I had delivered a new cat last year with Yanmar's and their own filter systems and I changed each out for the dual bowl system Racor's. Why: easy replacement of filter elements (I use 3 micron), quick change over of filters in event of one clogging, vacuum gauge reference, visual reference of fuel quality with glass bowls and easy drainage. Honestly, I didn't give the Yanmar filter the opportunity to see them function and Im sure they would be fine but the dual redundancy was important to me as we are liveaboard international cruisers and take fuel on in sometimes obscure countries and I wanted a proven, robust system which I believe Racor provides. I thought the Yanmar filter is not 'transparent' enough.

You mention 2500 as a price. Surely you are not quoting USD?

Thanks for your response. I agree and will go for it. Just Catamarans in FLL quoted 1325 each engine for the dual Racors

The Filterkit number 2666790 75500MAX2 dual filter assembly is $879.99 online at West Marine. A little shopping might save you more on that.

Re: Yanmar Fuel Filter

Racor 500FG filter/separators are selling for under $200 each. Four of these with the mounting brackets fuel line and selector switches and hose clamps can come to about $1,000.

I'm not surprised to see people pay the added $1,500 for the installation, but it is a simple job with simple tools.

I was just wondering what your warranty says about the filters, if anything.

2500 USD.. those scallywags..

Are you getting a brand new boat? If so you should not have any issues with accumulated crud or filter performance for a while, and if your usage environment isn't especially demanding I'm sure you would be just ok with the original filters for a few years at least, so I wouldn't be in a hurry just yet..

If you do want to go ahead though and don't mind saving a few bucks, Griffin has some units which are basically copies of the Racor but at a half price, and can use the Racor filters, so availability is no issue. (not all Griffins can use Racor filters so do your homework before pulling trigger)

Here is their US distributor's website (I have no affiliation):

Re: Yanmar Fuel Filter

Well, actually the Griffin dual filter assemblies are priced about $100. less than the 500 series at West Marine and WM has free shipping. I don't know if those are comparable to the 500 size of Racor or not or if they can use the Racor filter element. I don't have any reason to hype Racor or not but that was what the OP had originally stated.

Actually on second look the GTB22 filters can be used in the Racor 500 series.

Re: Yanmar Fuel Filter

Wonder if you can use the Yanmar filter with the clear bowl on the bottom as a replacement, Racor had the same thing (metal and clear bowl).

Why are you replacing a modern filter system with a dinosaur?

Why can't things remain where i carelessly left them?

Re: Yanmar Fuel Filter

The Yanmar filter may or may not be a newer design. Do you have inside information? Other systems, dinosaurs as you put it, may be trusted for valid reasons. Did you ever think that maybe the builder installed the Yanmar filter in order to save a few dollars?

Re: Yanmar Fuel Filter

According to Tony Athens (see boatdiesel.com) modern spin on filters hold many times more crud than the Racor.
And the spin on filters are much easier to change that the Racor.. In which you put in the paper element, then fill (but not overfill, almost impossible since the paper filter takes up all the room) put on the lid with gasket, hold down the lid while you tighten the handle.. What a mess!
It stands to reason that decades of research and development on fuel filtration have resulted in some level of improvement.
So, what is it? 50 year old filter technology, or modern?
Anyone want to replace their GPS with an ADF?
