Yanmar extortion

That would only be extortion if the dealers were FORCING you to buy from them, and threatening to kidnap your family if you didn't.

It sounds more likely that YanMar has sold franchises for their parts service, and that each franchise is restricted to a limited geography. That's actually quite common when you have paid for your franchise territory based on how many customers live in it, etc.

Got a car? Ever been to a new car dealership? Most of them were also forbidden to ADVERTISE for business outside of their franchise zone. Usually a franchisee can SELL to anyone--just not advertise outside of the area. It sounds like YanMar went one step beyond, in the age of the global village, to ensure their franchisees make a profit.

I'd still be surprised if you couldn't place an order from out of town, to one or the other of them. Maybe not across a national border--but at least within one.

Minards sell (and deliver) Yanmar parts anywhere in the world.

I suspect (but don't know) that they are not authorised Yanmar dealers but they do sell an awful lot of Yanmar engines and parts. I note they advertise Humane prices from the Yanmar diesel specialists, founded in 1981.

I am a Yanmar dealer and yes I can only sell in my area. But the pump is Johnson, you can call a Johnson pump dealer such as Depco in florida or Marelco in Seattle 206-545-4224 and ask for Bill, he will sell you all the parts you need.

So what engine manufacturers don't have this dealer distribution BS? Its sort of a turnoff to buying a Yanmar. Perhaps a Volvo, Westerbeke, Perkins or some other diesel would be better considering this potential hassle when it comes to getting parts for small sailboat engines. Tell you what, people working commercial boats would never put up with this. I have never heard of Caterpilllar, Cummins, or Detroit pulling this authorized dealer/distribution crap. I can buy parts for my Cummins from whoever I wish.

Paid $190 US for my 2GM rebuild kit. The whole pumps not worth that. Next time thanks to Inlet Marine I'll call Depco. Live and learn, it's why I, at times, seem to live here on this forum.

There was a long thread about aftermarket/same stuff/equivalent stuff and many showed how/where they got those things for their diesels.

Like some stuff from a diesel Rabbit was the same as a XXX on the boat.

There was even talk of a wiki so it could be collated somehow.

Actually I believe Minard's prices are reasonably cheaper than the other Yanmar agents and they do ship anywhere in the world so that also puts them at odds with the authorised agents.

I priced a 2GM20 from them a couple of years back and they were over a thousand dollars cheaper than the local agent even after shipping the engine across Australia. The local authorised agent wasn't happy but finally came to the party to match the price and throw in a few spare filters, impellors and belts to better the deal.

Thanks to the help on this thread I was able to order the necessary parts for my water pump from Depco for $42 plus shipping. I was fortunate in that the pump was not made by Yanmar.

I am looking for an assembley diagram for this cooling water pump on the ~ 1984 Yanmar 2GM. The same pump is in the 3GM, 2GM20, 3GM30, 2GML, and 3GMLE. Depco did not have a diagram.

Yes, I am careful taking things apart, but some of the seals were mangled when I removed them so I want to make sure that I return the new ones to their proper position.

Yanmar does not make their own pumps, Johnson Pump CO is the most common.

I read how its called extortion, but did you know many of us dealers only work off a 25% mark-up. You run a repair business and work off of a 25% mark-up. That is why some places are higher its called surving not extortion. Some places freight is higher.
Selling area keep the internet whores from selling at prices so low that no one can make any money. Other brands also do this not just Yanmar

I've yet to meet a whore not interested in making money but the amount always depends on who is pimping for them..... In this case I think Yanmar is wearing a Purple Hat!
