Look people its freaking simple run the engine put your hand over the exhaust if you you have a hand full of oil get a new engine.
Or get a compression check or waist money with sailorchicks theory.
It may be a fuel dump but a fuel dump is white smoke not black!!!
but what do I know I only rebuild engines.

I was an F15 mechanic/ crew chief in the air force. Nothing is scary about this.
It's not the smoke. It's the unburnt fuel it's dumping in the back that's raising questions.
As a mechanic you should know there's a ton a variables that can be present, that's what these forums are for.

Black smoke is the most common smoke emitted from diesel engines. It indicates poor and incomplete combustion of the diesel fuel. There are many causes, including

Incorrect timing
Dirty or worn injectors
Injectors sticking open too long (Common Rail Diesel type)
Over-fuelling
Faulty turbocharger (ie not enough air to match the fuel)
Incorrect valve clearance
Incorrect air/fuel ratio
Low cylinder compression (eg sticking piston rings or worn components)
Dirty air cleaner
Restricted induction system (eg system too small or kinked inlet piping)
Carboned up intake manifolds (esp Common Rail Diesels)
Other engine tune factors
Poor quality fuel
Excessive carbon build up in combustion and exhaust spaces

Honey, I'm sorry, but the above is just not correct.
Blue smoke is oil past the rings. Mind you when my engine burned a quart of oil every 5 hours, there was no smoke.

black smoke is rich mixture
white smoke is water
grey smoke is unburnt fuel/ fuel dump

Re: Yanmar diesel smoking/ black soot

If this were my engine I would start with the easy things first.

Is the air intake clogged or restricted in any way?
Is the compression good?
Are the injectors good and are they installed correctly?

If those things checked out I would then proceed with the HP fuel pump and governor.

Black or while is fuel. Check the injectors and pumps...

Well when I was 20 years old, I had an old diesel engine just for personal learning experiences I went threw all the testing of possible problems. Things like valve lifters gaskets rings injector timing. cracked cam, blocks and crank shafts,I complied my facts to mathematics. I used chemistry like dilutions of hydrochloric acid to find the sulfur in oil. my dad worked at Gulf Oil laboratories. he had an electronic microscope that I used to to get my calculations and formulas. I used Mic's and did clearance checks and gap checks. I received my facts in real time. have you ever done this DEAR? Also my dad had a PHD I don't care what you read on the internet some of it can be true most is not.and most surly is not ,if your not there to see it the my guess its not what you say it is. DEAR

Thanks for the info, I must pass it on to the guy who tuned my diesel truck.
It was passing large amounts of black smoke, he adjusted the fuel and timing and explained that it was overfueled.
He runs three dyno's, two suited to bogie drive prime movers and is so busy that one needs to book in a week in advance, but heck what the hell would he know.

make me laugh when people compare small 2cyclinder raw water engines to v8 computerized turbo charged diesel engines to these 20 year old junkers hehe

Actually a four cylinder slightly tired toyota motor, however the principle remains the same, too much fuel results in black smoke.
Regardless of the use diesel motors are preety much all the same operating principle.

And just how does two broken rings lead you to the statement that black smoke is the result of oil burn and not excess fuel in the chamber ?
