Yanmar Alternator Upgrade

If you have a 2GM or a 3gm this a 60 or 80 amp alternator upgrade. The alternator from newer YM series will fit. We just installed the YM series 80 amp on a 3GM30F. There is a extra wire that you ignore, the wire is for the tach on the YM series. e-mail me for part #s

I am thinking of upgrading the alternator on my Y2GM 20F. Which one do you reccomend? And how difficult is it to do? Thanks.

Contact you Yanmar Dealer, ask for a alternator off of a newer YM series. Either a 60 or 80 amp and ignore the extra wire. If you are in WA, OR,ID or Alaska then I can help you with a good price on a new take off.

Patrick:

Are you aware that by "upgrading" to the Yanmar (probably built by Hitachi) YM alternator, you are not going to significantly improve your charging.

That is because the Yanmar alternators have a built in regulator that is designed to recharge the starting battery after a few amphours have been used for starting, but is totally unsuitable for replacing a lot of amphours in a large house battery bank.

To do that you need a high output alternator (Balmar, Powerline, Ample Power, etc) with an external, three step regulator. These alternators will put out about 60-80 amps at 1500 engine rpm and 100 amps at 2500. Choose an alternator rated at 100 amp. Any higher is too much load for the 2gm.
