But white smoke does sound like it is getting fuel.
I'm an old Nanny, but have the intake open and have something handy to cover the intake with to choke it down if it runs away, something substantial like a piece of 2X 8 wood, it will eat rags and will pull blood from a body part.
I say this as I have only seen one run away and it was a
Diesel that was being recommissioned, it was hard to start with lots of white smoke (fuel), and when it started ,it got exciting fast.
