Re: Yanmar 4JH2E exhaust problem - weak bolt holes

TS,
Good decision! I figured there would be more problems. good to deal with them now then when the next problem rears its ugly head. And Murphys law say it will be at the most inconvenient time. Its good that you found another solution for the studs. Whatever works and holds to its best ability, no matter the source.

Re: Yanmar 4JH2E exhaust problem - weak bolt holes

Congrats Tacoma! Good decision. & you are fixing other future "problems",while ur into it. I read & looked at pics in links to older threads on this unit. The internal corrosion appears common. Is there a possibility that the raw salt water is "splattering" back into the exhaust passage, from where it is injected into the elbow-possibly during idle/lo speed. In other words, should the elbow casting have a "deflector",if possible,to direct the raw water "downhill" more.Just a thot. / Len

Certainly the right way to go, many problems solved before they rear their ugly heads. Congrats.

Re: Yanmar 4JH2E exhaust problem - weak bolt holes

Tacoma--Yes,that looks same as pics of other 4JH2E manifolds in other posts/links.Really suggests some salt water is getting back from the elbow.Certainly not a lot,or you would have experienced waterlock/bad exh valves, etc.I'm just guessing here, but, since it appears to be a fairly common problem,it appears the mixing elbow design is poor,in that some salt spatter or steam is going back toward manifold. While u have it apart, try running a garden hose into the injection fitting on elbow,& see what it looks like entering the exhaust passage in elbow. Good luck! / Len
