Yanmar 36hp

How much is too much for a Yanmar 36hp motor. Realizing this is a subjective question, and assuming the engine is running well...how many hours constitute the engine's lifespan w/out a rebuild? Additionally, any suggestions for evaluating the engines condition? I have quite a bit of experience w/gas engines, but nothing w/diesels. Any help would be appreciated....

Re: Yanmar 36hp

the equivalent engine running a generator with a continuous rating in an industrial/commercial setting can very easily run up to 10k to 15k hours. But stick it in a pleasure craft, up the horse power, run it a few hours a year and a lot of times you're lucky to get 5000 hours. Usually the ones with more hours in a shorter period of time will be in better condition, but there are always exceptions.

How long is a piece of string.

Depends on type of use. Workboat engines like taxis get much longer life than ocassional use such as ocassional sailing.
