Yanmar 2gm20 - Oil Alarm Is On/Test?

Any quick thoughts on how to check to see if my oil alarm is real, or a problem with the sensor? I.e. a way to test the sensor (other than buying a new one - not in a place for that), or confirm the pump is still pumping oil?

Check it with a multi tester as:

1)To test the normally closed oil lamp circuit, disengage the locking connector and measure the resistance between the switch terminal (terminal for the wire to the warning lamp) and the metal housing. The ohmmeter should read 0 ohms.
2)To test the sending unit, measure the resistance between the sending unit terminal and the metal housing. The ohmmeter should read an open circuit (infinite resistance).

or if you access check with a mechanical gauge(should screw into the same hole)

Thanks Captsteve... so, the oil sensor (if operating correctly) would normally be closed when the engine isn't running (i.e. no oil pressure, so closing the circuit to light the idiot light), and open when it is running, is that correct?

Yes, that is correct.

Also, if the light / buzzer is on when the engine is runnings, it is possible there is a wiring fault between the sensor and the engine panel.

To check, stop the engine, turn the key on (but not to the start position), the light / buzzer should operate (due to no oil pressure while engine is stopped), now remove the wire from the sender unit and light/ buzzer should no longer operate.

you did not say when your alarm is on, engine running ? engine off key on ? some both have a oil light as well as a oil pressure indicator. do you only have a light with a audio alarm. or do you just want to know if it is working

It's going off when the engine is running, both light and alarm...

Re: Yanmar 2gm20 - Oil Alarm Is On/Test?

if going off with the engine running, first remove wire from oil pressure switch, do not let the end of the wire touch the engine, them turn the ign, key on , if you hear alarm you have a wiring problem. if no alarm suspect oil pressure sw.
do to did not report strange noise from engine I would replace the switch. you could remove the switch and crank the engine and see if oil comes out of the port, a little messy, place a rag to check oil.
the oil pressure switch does not cost much.
a kabota oil press switch will fit your engine p/n15841-39010 about 20.00 us
good luck
