Yanmar 2GM/Kanzaki KM2A question

I have some slip in my transmission, and I know that what I should do is take it out and get the cones deglazed. But I tried something that may or may not be a good idea: I reconnected the shift cable connection to the hole in the transmission shift lever that is closer to the shifter shaft.

This means the engine control lever now provides more throw to the gearbox shifter. It doesn't slip any more, but my question is this: will the extra throw mean I am now buggering up the shifter and cone by imparting more force on it via the shifter?

thanks, lockie
