Yanmar 2 GM swap

Hi all

I lost my 1983 yanmar 2gm. It seized. Seems I lost an oil seal and all my oil in fairly short order and think that I had the key in the wrong position. I had been having some issues with all of the idiot lights coming on and when just the oil light illuminated I didn’t react fast enough when I did see the idiot light, and bang.

I am looking for a replacement now and am wondering whether a 2QM 20 would fit in the same space and provide a little HP boost as well. The specs look very promising, but has anybody actually made this swap?

Alternatively, does anyone have a 2 GM 13 for sale?

Cheers!

Re: Yanmar 2 GM swap

I don't know for sure but I have a 2QM20 and seen a 2GM20 on someone elses boat and I think the 2QM20 is actually a bit larger and a lot heavier

Dunno about the HP boost either

What's wrong with getting another 2GM20? I think there is probably more of them out there - they made a lot more of them

Re: Yanmar 2 GM swap

Hi

Thanks for that reply

I had a 13 hp yanmar 2 gm and there aren’t nearly as many out there as you would imagine. Or at least that I can find, so I thought I’d shake the tree.

The 2 gm 13 weighs 245# or thereabouts. Any idea what your 2 QM 20 weighs?

I think a 50% bump in hp will provide better power as 13 comes up very short in rolly waves or currents.

But I’d rather test my theory here than upside down in my cramped engine “room”

Cheers!

Re: Yanmar 2 GM swap

Sorry - I thought you had a 2GM20, the HP boost makes sense then! I'd honestly look at a 2GM20 - I think a lot of the parts are interchangeable with your old engine as well, so you'd have a bunch of spares.

I'd strip the old one down and see what was damaged. You may find it can be rebuilt.

Al Holzer at www.schoonerbaymarina.com has several 2 cylinder Yanmars rebuilt and fairly priced. He is in Wisconsin and ships anywhere..

Re: Yanmar 2 GM swap

The older 2GM and the later 2GM20 are physically the same so a straight swap, plus you would get a few more extra horse power depending on whether it was an earlier or later model (16Hp to 18Hp). As far as I can tell all they did was increase the max rpm from 3400 to 3600 to gain the extra Hp.

Re: Yanmar 2 GM swap

My understanding was that the 2GM20 was and overbore version of the 2GM.
The engine body and most parts are the same. The cylinders were enlarged to achieve more HP.
The 2GM20 should have the same footprint.

Regards

Re: Yanmar 2 GM swap

I had a 2gm and felt I needed more kick into the tide or against the wind. I swapped out my working 2gm for a 2gm20f. It was an easy swap the gm20 might be a hair longer but it all fit in the same space. I also got fresh water cooled engine with which I was able to get a hot water supply for showers with a heat exchanger added to the engine. So far pretty happy with the change the engine runs great it was a used engine I do not think you will find one as inexpensive as I did and I was able to sell the 2gm for the same cost as the gm20f.

You can find all the engine specs on line for both engine and transmission. Do your research first.
You can also put in a Beta engine in as well

Re: Yanmar 2 GM swap

If I had my duthers, Id go for a 3gm... the dimensions are similar to a 2GM... I struggle to get to hull speed in my boat with a 2gm. The extra couple of ponies would be a confidence builder.

Re: Yanmar 2 GM swap

I had a pretty tight space on a Kelt8.5 the specs on the 3gm which I agree I would have put in but did not have the space to do it. I was able to put the gm20f right on the same motor mounts

Re: Yanmar 2 GM swap

I have a Yanmar 2GM that just did a valve job on and cleaned all the cooling passages. If your interested PM me for my phone number. I replaced it with a larger engine. Should be easy to ship to your location.

I have had a couple of 2GM20 engines and currently have a 2QM20.

In your situation, I think you would be better off with the 2GM20.

The QM is a very different engine to the GM and while I think the QM is better engine overall, it is very very heavy and a little bigger than the GM. In fact it is about 100Kg heavier or put another way - about twice as heavy.

IMO, the QM will outlast the GM and achieves it max hp at 2800 rpm compared to 3600 for the GM. The QM has wet liners and then GM does not have replaceable liners.

IMO the GM is best suited in a recreational sailboat while the QM is best suited for small workboat.
