Unhappy Yanmar 15, 2Cylinder died on me!

I might run out of gas but my gage still indicate a quarter, I cannot have the motor to start, it turns but nothing else, I have put some fuel and no answers from it! Did already purge the fuel pump and tried also with the injectors.
There is another place to look at?
Thanks

Hi, so quick question, when you bleed the fuel through, do you get fuel with no air to the injector pump???
Did you crack the nut on an injector while turning over to ensure the air is out of the injector it's self??

What did you do to the engine before the problem was encountered?

Actually, I didn't make that a very clear question. I will try that again. So did you find air in the system at all???
Just asking so as we can eliminate possible low/no fuel or not.

Hard to say, we opened the fuel pump right away and then bleeded it.

I'm certainly no expert, but...

We encountered a similar problem on our last boat.

Started at injectors and worked backwards on fuel system.

Problem turned out to be a small bio-mass of goo clogging end of fuel pick-up tube in fuel tank. It looked kinda like a rubber band wrapped around tube with end sucked up inside of it restricting flow.

It allowed enough fuel to bleed system but restricted enough to prevent running.

Old fuel stored in quatrer-full tank in tropics = bio sludge.

Probably true in cold climates, too. Condensation inside of tank may be core problem.

Happy hunting,

Kirk

Sometimes gauges lie...

Gauges sometimes lie.
Have you physically checked the contents of your tank?
The other thing that you could do is to top up your tank so that it is a least half full.
If it were my engine and I knew little about mechanics I would find a competant marine mechanic to look at it.
Life is too short to live with an unreliable engine.

Yanmar 15

The Yanmar 15 is a reliable engine if it gets clean fuel. Lets not blame the engine. You may be out of fuel, so put some in the tank and then check to see if the fuel is flowing. There is probably a lever on the fuel pump to manually pump the fuel through. This will get the fuel to the small filter on the engine. Then bleed the system again. Use the compression release and crank it over to bleed the line. The book says to do this at the entrance to the lines that go to the injectors. So that will leave some air in the lines. After bleeding crank it some more with the compression release on. It may fire on one cylinder, let it run for a bit to see if the other one fires. If you did run out of fuel some grud may have been sucked out of the tank and down the lines. Hopefully the crud did not get past the primary filter. The nuts on the forward end of the fuel lines are not the easiest to get at, especially the one closest to the block. You may need a couple of different wrenches.

Been There, Done That

I recently encountered the same problem. It wound up being the screen at the bottom of the pick-up tube. Tore it out, and she's run fine ever since.

Before you start chasing ghosts of air bubbles and whatnot, check this. It' a ten minute fix.

My experience with bleeding diesel engines is to start with changing filters. Make certain you have fuel in your tank. Start at the tank end and bleed each place where air might be trapped. I start at the tank and go all the way to the injectors. If there are still air bubbles anywhere it will not fire. Start over again until you bleed all the air out of the system.
Good luck. Yanmar is a great engine. Its got to be dirt or air in the system.

Well after 150.00$ we realized that we actually got short on diesel, the gauge is not working properly and we also add some air into the pump itself. The mecanic said air is usually purge by Yanmar but only if the engine is running...so that is why it did not want to restart...but thanfully it is working well again. Thank you all for your support!!!

Air

The Yanmar fuel pump does not eat air bubbles, so when you fill the tank after running out of fuel the engine will not start, until you bleed the lines. Some engines will start after adding fuel. Your motor generally will not. The fuel guage may not be accurate, add fuel every 3 months until you get used to how much it uses. My guage reads about 3/4 full when the tank is actually full. Sunlite dish soap hides the oil slick.

Mike, thank you I have been told this actually and my guage is the same as yours. It doesn't go past 3/4. I will get use to it.
