Yamaha problem, need help

I've recently repowered my 23 sloop with a used 9.9 Yamaha outboard engine. Starts great, revs good in neutral,. But when under a load in gear it doesn't want to rev up. Gas comes out of the carb air intake. .???

sounds like you need to remove the carb and clean the float valve and jet.

prop might be a bit over pitched as well

Have you got a dink that will handle an engine that size? If so, put the engine on the dink and see if the same thing happens. If yes, you've got a carburetor problem. If no, you've got a prop problem.

Re: Yamaha problem, need help

Your Check Valve is blocked which is making your float stick which in turn is flooding your carb .Thats why gas is coming out . You need to take off your carbi and clean it . Get yourself a can of carbi spray. Yamahas have a realey good reputation as long as you use em .Leave them un used and they are a pain in the ass .

Thanks for the helpful advice. And for relieving my mind that it's not something major. I'll work on the carb when it stops raining here in sunny Florida and let you know the outcome.
