Yamaha Outboard No More Thrust?

He guys
our Yamaha 9.9 outboard hit something yesterday and seems not
to be wanting to turn no more, engine runs fine!
Similar thing happened some time ago and at that time the propeller
safety gave up, I don't think that is the case this time!
When I put the engine in gear and try to turn the propeller axe
I can turn it by hand, ( so it doesn't engage??)
When I engage I don't seem to be able to pull the starter, but
this can be normal as I never tried it before!!
Anybody have an Idea where to look?

Many small Yamahas have a mechanical lock on the starter to prevent pulling it in gear. (This can sometime fall into place/stick and prevent you starting even out of gear and you need to take the cover of and flick it back out)

Does you model have a shear pin?

Trying to pull the starter was just a way of testing wether when pulling
the engine/in gear the propeller axe would turn!!
But in any case it is not normal to pull the starter when engaged!!
So I still don't know what has snapped, like a pinion, that stops
the engine from engaging the propeller!!
I don't what a shear pin is, but maybe that's exactly it
where would it be situated,

You have most likely spun a prop. There are no shear pins in a 9.9. The propeller has a rubber hub which separates when you hit something to prevent damage to the drive train. You just need a new propeller.

True that was our first thought, so why can I still turn the propeller shaft
when the engine is in gear/reverse or forward,
that doesn't just make sense, also I still have an old prop that was
broken in the way you mention,, and this one does not look the same??

If it is like other drives, it should turn one way but not the other when in gear, which way depending on which gear.

Vasco is all probablility correct. A spun hub still has enough friction to tturn the prop with no load on it unless it has been completely destroyed. The other option is that you have sheared the tynes on the clutch dog. This is highly unlikely and would only affect forward gear (assuming you were in forward when you struck the object). Does the engine move the boat at idle speed, but simply increase in RPM when you apply more throttle? If so, this is a classic symptom of a spun hub. If you have a very heavy boat it may not move much at idle speed.

I spun the prop hub on our Merc 15 without hitting anything. The prop will have enough tension on the hub at idle to move the boat, but just revs up when throttle is applied. Changed out to the needed spare and off we go. You can put screws or pins in thought the hub to make it a backup. Safe???

Vasco & Capt Bill are right... You spun the rubber hub. It is designed that way to protect the drive train.

When I was cruising, several buddy boats did the same thing...

The lucky ones had a spare prop. The unlucky ones tried to repair the hub with thru-bolts, which never last more than an hour or two.

Find a spare prop on Ebay and see what happens

You don't need to buy a new prop if you spin a hub. You can a new hub bushing pressed in for ~$25. Any prop shop will have them in stock and you will be on your way in minutes.

I always carry a spare prop. You can get one online for $50. Did not know about re-hubbing.

Yes, we too consider a spare prop essential. When we spin one (happened only once), we re-hub it and keep it as the spare.

Vasco is correct in his assessment but instead of biyung a new prop, take it to a prop shop and they will press a new bushing into the prop and it will be better than new. I had the same motor will the same problem. Good luck.

Yep! I agree with the consensus. I had the same thing happen to me last summer. While engine was running and in gear the prop appeared to be turning, so I wasn't sure what was wrong. As others mentioned, it could still turn due to friction. Just no torque to push boat. Took it to a shop. Replaced the spun prop and all was good.
