Yamaha 9.9 - Slow Prop?

Hello, Recently when I attempted to move in forward gear my propeller did not turn fast enough to move the boat at more than about 1 knot even at high rpm's. Anyone know why this might ocurr and advice on remedial action.

Probably your propeller hub insert is loose inside the propeller hub. Happened a while back to me. Likely the prop is only turning a fraction of the RPMs.

2 remedies- short term, drill some holes through the hub and place some screws through into the hub insert.
Long-term, buy a new prop

I am assuming the obvious here- the prop is not fouled, missing blades, and the gearbox is not fried (would probably be all or nothing rather than 1 knot)

Put it in gear and try to spin it by hand. Sounds like the hub is spun?

You've spun your prop. Get a new one.

Sounds like a consensus. No it is not fouled but I do ahve trouble finding neutral and yanking on the manual start chord when in gear catches. Could this ahve caused the problem?

No, it's usually caused by hitting something. I hit hard once but it didn't spin the prop. Two years later I goosed it when the dink was heavily loaded (6 6-gallon jugs of water and two adults) and the prop spun. I guess I had weakened the rubber hub when I hit and goosing it when heavily loaded finally did it. Make sure you get the proper prop when you get a new one. The size is on the prop but you have to really look carefully to see it.

The hub is shot, but don't throw away the prop. Any competent prop shop can rehub it for a fraction of the cost of a new prop.

Here on Nantucket they have to send it off island for rehub so - I sent for a new one hoping it will solve my latest engine problem! (a few people here said it could e the shear pin but. . .the boat moves forward; albeit slowly.)
