Yamaha 9.9 2015 model reverse gear fails to engage. Any hints?

Hi everybody,

one of my Yamaha 9.9 outboards is not locking the prop in reverse gear.
It feels like we can not rotate the gear lever as to the point that it settles in.

Anybody here has a clever idea what is broken and how to fix it.
We think it might be something with the lever and not inside the lower casing. Still, maybe we are mistaken with that assumption.
