Winterizing Westerbeke 7hp

I have oday 27 1987 with westerbeke 7h engine and have no idea how winterize it. Some people say i have to drain all liquid from it. Antifreeze too? why? it doesn't freeze. Is there any water in water pump left? Anyone has info I would appreciate it.

It would be helpful to know where you are and if the ambient temp falls below 0 deg C. Also helpful would be a desc of whether your engine is raw waster cooled or fresh water cooled and if you have a water lift muffler. Without knowing these basic facts, it's impossible to respond.

Does it have a heat exchanger? If so, it contains antifreeze already. Just run antifreeze through the engine block by putting the raw water intake into a bucket of antifreeze mix while running until it exists the thru hull. Doing so will eliminate the uncertainty of risking damage. For the price of a couple of gallons of antifreeze, isn't it worth the extra effort to make sure?

I used to live near New London and it gets WAY below 15C in the winter!!!

Re: Winterizing Westerbeke 7hp

I think it's raw water cooled only (no heat exchanger), so you must drain the system: unscrew the pump cover, remove the impeller, and drain the water lift muffler. To be safe, I'd also remove the thermostat. Replace the cover without the impeller (don't forget to replace the impeller in the Spring).

If you're determined to just run antifreeze through the system instead, be sure the engine is completely warmed up with sea water running through it before you pump the antifreeze! Otherwise the thermostat will not be open, and you'll not get antifreeze to the block and head!

Good luck with the winterizing, and keep warm!

I can do that thing with impeller, but I will not be able to get engine warm, a boat already on a ground. Is there another way?

Just drain the system completely as noted above and you'll be fine...you do not need to run antifreeze through it.
